Sometimes it's extremely important that a child follow the rules. Red means stop, green means go, and that's that. But sometimes it doesn't matter, except for the impression they make to who ever is paying attention, and when that's the case, I've found it helpful to tell them, so that they understand that a particular request has more to do with my need to appear a certain way than what they're doing. And sometimes when I do that, they do what I ask, just to be nice. And those times are gold!
A child won't wear their coat in the winter.
I don’t care if you walk around naked, but you’re making me look bad in front of the neighbors.
